We've been covering alternatives to iTunes for Pre/Pixi music syncing since Apple finally defeated Palm's efforts to spoof iTunes into supporting the Pre, and we just got word of the latest version of another fine choice. Version 1.8 of Songbird, a free player for Windows, OS X and Linux, has just graduated from beta, and is available for download at the Songbird Web site.
Although the release notes for this latest version discuss the new devices it supports (Storm, Evo, Magic, etc.), Songbird has officially supported the Pre since last December, and the current version continues that support. With video, playlists, and syncing all built in, Songbird is definitely worth a look for your music and media management.

Captain Kirk sported some interesting gear that would naturally appease the most hardcore Star Trek fan out there, but the real life Captain Kirk nonchalantly whipped out one smartphone that some would be surprised to see the old captain packing. During the taping for The New York Times’ online Screen Test series, William Shatner, or simply the Shat, spent the time talking about the beloved series, but interestingly enough, took out his cell phone to take a call from his daughter. No, it wasn’t some kind of Star Trek oriented looking handset, but instead, just simply the webOS powered Palm Pre. It’s hard to see which version he is carrying, but you can distinctively hear the default webOS ringtone playing as he’s receiving a phone call. Although it wasn’t the focal point of the video, it’s nice to see someone like the good captain keeping it real.

Loose lips sink ships goes the old saying, and passing along secrets about webOS 2.0 can sink a software developer. After someone revealed some secrets to PreCentral about a virtual keyboard for the next webOS build, Palm responded by freezing early access to the SDK. Obviously, the virtual keyboard is a major part of the design of the new OS and based on the tweet sent out by the manufacturer, Palm is a little perturbed. Developers shouldn’t expect to receive anything from Palm until Palm is good and ready to release it. In other words, developers have been grounded by Palm and sent to their room without dessert.

It seems that Oracle CEO and largest shareholder Larry Ellison is putting his money where is mouth is. After blasting HP for releasing CEO Mark Hurd (equating it to Apple’s firing of Steve Jobs back in 1985, Ellison has brought Hurd onboard to help helm his technology empire. Hurd and Ellison have long been personal friends, and Ellison has never been timid in expressing his support for Hurd. In fact, the two worked together often as executives, with HP and Oracle capitalizing on several corporate partnerships.
Hurd will be replacing retiring Oracle co-president and board member Charles Phillips, Jr. As co-president, Hurd will be slotting alongside current Oracle executive Safra Catz, and will report to Ellison. On his decision to bring Hurd into Oracle’s executive team, Ellison was not short on praise: “Mark did a brilliant job at H.P., and I expect he’ll do even better at Oracle. There is no executive in the I.T. world with more relevant experience than Mark.”

PuffTheMagic has let the world know that version 0.3.2 of wIRC is out and if you haven't checked out this IRC client for chatting like crazy, it's time you did. A couple versions ago they switch the app to "hybrid," which means it uses both regular SDK code and native PDK code for a faster experience. This version brings Beta support for SSL, a must for people connecting to secure chat rooms (and on the short list of must-have apps for any smartphone OS for Engadget's Joshua Topolsky - we're not saying, we're just saying).
You may also have missed the improved color support, event messages, and more that have come with recent updates to wIRC.

We here in Republic of webOS are looking with envy at our frienemies in Applestan and Androidia. It’s not their operating systems that are the object of our desire, though there are some features we’d like to copy. No, it’s the tablets that have drawn our eye. While Applestans may only have the iPad to play with, that certainly hasn’t stopped the 10-inch tablet from being a success.
Meanwhile, Androidians have to cope with a new tablet a week, from the 5-inch Dell Streak to the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab to the just-announced ten inches of Toshiba Folio 100 (really, guys, Folio?). All this tablety fun has us longing for our own big screen webOS action here in the Republic, and thankfully HP has at least let us know that we can expect to see that mythical webOS tablet early in 2011.
Next year is still a ways off and while we’re sure it’ll be here before we know it, there’s still the question of how will the PalmPad/Hurricane/whatever look when it arrives. So we are asking you, of citizens of the Republic of webOS: what size screen do you want on your webOS tablet?

One of the newest additions of the Facebook app has been the ability to upload a photo, write a caption for the photo, and then tag it directly in the Facebook app. Of course, you can also tag a picture in any of your other albums--not just the ones you upload from the App--but note that you can not tag any of your friend's photos To accomplish the upload and tagging, just follow the simple steps after the break:

The exodus of what made up Palm's top brass leading up to its merger with HP was as sudden as it was swift - the heads of nearly every department have jumped ship to the likes of Apple, Google, Twitter and even Intel. One of the last of the displaced execs, former VP of PR Lynn Fox, has recently joined uStream (the company behind the video casting technology used in our live stream for the PalmCast) to lead the company's PR activities.
Hey Lynn - Can you please get us an option to pay for a pro account that kills off those annoying preroll ads and maybe also makes it easer to use uStream for multi-person video conference broadcasting? KTHX!!
